Riviera Maya day 4 Chichen Itza
Loved this day!!! Even though it was so hot you felt like you were constantly peeing your pants cause sweat was literally just pouring from you, and there were a few times I thought I was going to pass out, I kept with it and took in the history and fascination of the Mayan culture!!! This is the city of Chichen Itza, a thriving culture of people who studied the sky and built amazing structures that aligned with the stars and planets, even to where on March 21st every year during the spring equinox, the main building structure hits with the sun and shadows just right to where a serpent forms on the building! How they knew to build this building in the perfect location with features that show up when they dance with the light and shadows of the sun, is beyond me! But I am completely fascinated with the knowledge that these people had, and how they literally overnight vanished!
This structure below is El Castillo, it is actually a calender. Each of the pyramids four sides has 91 steps, when added together and including the platform on top equal 365 steps. The platform on top is to represent leap year! Yes! They knew to add that in to!
The picture below is a stage that they use to entertain on. They weren't the nicest of people, and some of their entertainment was quite bloody.
The paint they used to make the red paint below was from paprika.
Here below is the hoop of a game that would be considered as a type of basketball in our days today. They made a ball that had to be put through this hole using any part of their body other than their hands. The hole was extremely high up and the Mayans where not the tallest of people, so it was very hard to get the ball through.
There was no place for an audience to sit, so it was thought that they played for their gods and high council only.
The below pictures tell of one of the teams getting their heads cut off, they don't know if it was the winning team because they killed them because the gods only wanted the best warriors, or if it was the losing team because they had lost.
Did I mention how hot it was!!!!????
This below is called the wall of skulls, when trying to preserve this wall they found actual skeletons inside the walls with spears struck down through the skulls.
Absolutely amazing to be standing next to this structure!
Here is the sacrificial well. It is believed that this was a place they sacrificed people to their gods.
Below is a picture of the platform people stood on before being sent to the waters below.
All the rock there is obsidian.
After visiting Chichen itza, we went to the cenote Ik Kil! Where we got to swim in its said to be healing waters!!
Walking down to the cenote there are high cliffs, I was definitely not about to jump from them!
My brother in law had decided other wise!! haha
It was to say the least the most magical moment of my life!!! (other than my babies being born) As the rain fell through the tiny hole up above, it caught a rainbow and no joking every rain drop was a different color!! I have never seen something like this in my life!!! Like I said the most magical moment ever!!!! You can see in the picture below the colored rain drops!!!
Here I have decided that I was glowing because I was being healed! haha
Here is my brother in law jumping from the cliff!
Another picture of my brother in law jumping!
After swimming in the cenote, we walked into the city Piste' where we had lunch and took in the sights!
There were beautiful churches and buildings in this city!
He had a little crush on Melissa!! haha
The picture below is funny to me, because we are kinda lost, and I am trying to figure out where we are, Melissa is itching like crazy from a heat rash! and Blaine is just like what ever man, Lets get a drink!
So we came across some Mexican police and Corey asked one of the cops if he could sit on his bike, and he let him!!!
